A number of Ladies in White throughout the island suffered arrests at the hands of the political police for simply trying to assist Mass this past Sunday, June 3rd 2012. However, many of these women managed to surpass repressive police cordons and arrive to their respective churches to pray for the freedom of all Cuban political prisoners.
In the city of Havana, the former political prisoner from the group of the 75, Librado Linares (resident of Villa Clara province) sent out a Twitter message (@LibradoLinares) detailing that a total of more than 100 dissidents (Ladies in White mainly) managed to make it to Santa Rita Church. This temple is where the Ladies in White from Havana march to Sunday after Sunday. Librado’s Twitter message also declared that “the Ladies in White have consolidated themselves. This space of freedom has been conquered“.
In Cardenas, Matanzas, the Lady in White Caridad Burunate (who constantly has her home surrounded by police agents who have even gone to the point of throwing pig excrement at her walls) also sent out a Twitter message (@CaridadBurunate) with positive news. “In Cardenas, 9 Ladies in White made it to Mass“, among them were Leticia Ramos Herreria (representative of the female group in Matanzas), Teresa Castellanos, Yuli Hernandez and Burunate herself. Another message published by the activist explained that the march carried out by these women occurred “under vigilance” on behalf of the “habitual snitches“.
In El Cobre, Santiago de Cuba, 29 Ladies in White made it the Sanctuary of Our Virgin of Charity, according to a report offered to “Radio Martí” by Karina Quintana. In that same testimony, the Lady in White explained that the churchgoers received the dissidents with the “kiss/greeting of peace” and assured them that they would continue praying for them.
In Guantanamo, 6 Ladies in White assisted Mass, according to a report made by José Daniel Ferrer García for “Háblalo sin Miedo”. After Mass, the women marched to the home of Rosaida Ramirez, wife of political prisoner Rogelio Tabio.
In Bayamo, Jacquelin García, wife of political prisoner Ariel Arzuaga and Lady in White, was detained since Saturday June 2nd so that she would not assist Mass, according to a report by Jose Daniel Ferrer also for ‘Háblalo sin Miedo’.
In the city of Holguín, the Lady in White Caridad Caballero Batista was violently arrested along with her husband Esteban Sandez Suarez when they were both trying to walk to Mass. According to declarations made by Caballero Batista to this blog, her home had been surrounded by a number of police agents since Friday, June 1st. Despite being aware that her home was under a strong vigilance- under the direction of agent Yordanys Leon- Caballero assured her oppressors that her “home is not a dungeon” and the couple decided to step outside. Both were arrested by a number of political police agents and taken to the Pedernales Unit, kept in sealed-off dungeons, and released as soon as Mass was over. When they arrived back to their home, the police operation was still active. The same occurred with Berta Guerrero Segura in Cacocum. However, Caballero Batista pointed out that 7 Ladies in White managed to make it to the Jesus Christ Redeemer of Men Church in Holguin. These were Zuleidys Pérez, Romelia Pina González, Lisedys Piña González, Ana María Paneque, Nelda Molina Leyva, Adisnidia Cruz and Barbara Bauza.
