(Audio in Spanish):
This Thursday, June 9th 2011, a group of pro-democracy activists and defenders of human rights participated in an important activity which consisted of a march where all the participants were wearing their clothes inside out and were walking through the streets of Placetas. This march, just like the one which took place on May 25th during the closing of the Zapata Boitel Tribute, was carried out in pairs. In other words, in this case Loreto Hernandez Garcia headed out with Yusniel Rodriguez. Donaida Perez Paceiro walked with Yaimara Reyes Mesa. Blas Agusto Fortun walked with Reinaldo Rodriguez Ramirez and with Rene Fernandez Chiroa. They walked up and down the most centric streets of the city. They even stopped by stores and other establishments to get the attention of the population, which was succesful. Many asked why they were wearing their clothes inside out. The reply was that this was an act of solidarity with Guillermo Farinas and his hunger strike (which he canceled this past Friday but whose health continues debilitated) and with Yris Tamara Perez Aguilera who, for carrying out a similar march, was brutally beaten and continues bed-ridden at home. There were no arrests this time, but there was lots of harassment on behalf of the political police which were constantly keeping an eye on the protesters. I think the merit of this activity lies in that- the political police fears the impact which these activities produce, especially the social impact of having everyday people come into contact with the peaceful opposition.
Also, in other information, the Orlando Zapata Tamayo National Civic Resistance and Civil Disobedience Front is calling on the internal opposition to erect monuments in homage to the memory of Orlando Zapata Tamayo seeing as his remains now reside outside of Cuba. We believe that constructing such statues, memorial stones, photographs, etc., in public places will be another effective way of saying “Zapata Lives On!”.
